With today’s advanced geophysical imaging technologies, engineers have much more information available to them about subsurface conditions than they previously had through traditional boring and test pitting.
These innovative and generally non-invasive techniques enhance SCI’s geotechnical services. They provide additional data for analysis and evaluation and, in many cases, save time and money.
Geophysical imaging techniques can be used independently or in conjunction with other methods to provide supplemental information for a wide range of projects.
SCI Senior Geophysicist Dr. Neil Anderson states, “What tool is the most effective in a particular situation depends on quite a few variables. We need to consider what the ultimate deliverable will be; what the immediate environment looks like; the size, depth, and physical properties of the target; and so forth.”
For example, several geophysical technologies have practical applications for transportation departments and are being used for many exploratory activities, such as:
- Inspecting bridge decks and pavements
- Identifying deteriorating rebar in concrete
- Locating underground utilities
- Mapping the top of groundwater or bedrock
- Finding subsurface voids
