Carondelet Coke

SCI conducted a cultural resource survey for the City of St. Louis, Missouri of a former industrial site covering portions of sixteen city blocks in the City of St. Louis, MO. The former industrial site was developed as early a 1700 by the French for a missionary. By the mid 19th century the site was reinvested as a iron foundry. By the turn of the 20th century the iron foundry was razed and replaced with a factory carbonizing coal into coke. SCI's architectural historian, Reed, performed Section 106 documentation of the remaining structures. The Section 106 also included background historical researching beginning in 1700.

Archaeological testing of the industrial facility was also part of the overall project. Deep testing located intact cultural horizons including both prehistoric and historic deposits.
