Department of Veterans Affairs

SCI has provided asbestos and lead-based paint services for the Department of Veterans Affairs for multiple renovation projects at the Marion VA Medical Center, John Cochran VA Hospital, and the Truman VA Medical Center.

Marion VA Medical Center — Marion, Illinois
SCI prepared an asbestos abatement work plan for the remediation of surface contamination in the steam tunnel and crawl space beneath several buildings. This work plan included the abatement of one thousand feet of thermal system insulation. SCI is currently performing project oversight, air sampling, and final clearance activities associated with the steam tunnel abatement project. SCI also evaluated suspect asbestos containing materials and lead-based paint which were likely to be impacted by the replacement of windows and/or window caulk and also prepared a building envelope investigation related to moisture intrusion and mold as part of the Exterior Caulking Phase of the project. SCI performed similar services relative to the replacement of numerous fire doors throughout the facility.
SCI has also performed emergency air monitoring activities in response to a water main break that flooded asbestos impacted crawl spaces that were in the process of being abated. SCI worked with the VA and the asbestos abatement contractor to expedite the cleanup activities and open the affected areas to the staff and maintenance personnel.

John Cochran VA Hospital — St. Louis, Missouri
SCI performed an assessment for the VA Hospital to identify asbestos containing materials (ACMs) in accessible areas of the building and to prepare a plan for abatement. The survey was conducted to satisfy the requirements for the asbestos National Emission Standard for Hazardous Air Pollutants for demolition and renovation.
SCI prepared the VA’s project specifications for asbestos abatement, and also prepared abatement specifications and provided third party air monitoring during the removal of asbestos-containing pipe wrap, pipe fittings, floor tile and mastic.

Truman VA Medical Center — Columbia, Missouri
SCI evaluated asbestos and lead-based paint, and performed a review of previous assessment reports, prior to the renovation of the pharmacy space and pathology labs at the Medical Center. SCI also performed a reconnaissance of the pharmacy area supplemented by limited sampling activities. SCI is performing an evaluation of the operation of numerous vents and fumehoods throughout the facility and is reviewing chemical/hazardous material storage options for various locations. Services also include an asbestos survey for the renovation of several laboratories.
