SCI was performing the removal of two underground storage tanks (USTs) from the parade ground area in front of the facility when we identified several large communication conduits had been encased in concrete and placed directly on top of and partially inside the USTs. According to the on-site personnel, this utility structure held the primary communication wires for the NGA facility and could not be jeopardized. At the request of the client, SCI proceeded with the removal of the USTs. SCI designed and constructed a large steel structure on top of and beneath the concrete utility conduit to provide support while the USTs were carefully emptied, cut, and removed. Once the USTs were removed, the excavation was filled with a suitable backfill and the steel concrete braces were removed with no damage to the communication lines or other nearby utilities.
